Try out
crlf.exe
and see what command line it takes to have it work.Adjust the generic printer or the page layout in Word to have everything work right with footers included.
Install the latest version of UniRed and see if its command-line launching works better or not.
I located the following files and moved them to the IETF Section for documented use later:
rfc3285.txt
: Using Word for Internet Drafts and RFCs2-Word.template.rtf
:
A boilerplate document set up for producing a correct plain-text document (downloaded 2002-10-14)crlf.exe
: The CR and LF converter program
I made a template in Microsoft Word 2000 by opening the
2-Word.template.rtf
document and saving it as a template,InternetDraft-2-Word.dot
, in the Microsoft Office template subdirectory.? I will edit this and keep it in compliance with the latest instructions.
I set out to make a working edit version of the document and experimented with the format.
- I worked on having the page headers and footers provide information the way I wanted it. This involved eliminating derived fields and having the document filled in explicitly.
- I filled in the page-1 top block and arranged to have it work.
- I got the table of contents to regenerate as I wanted, and began to use the supported styles.? There were some styles that had been reset so I set them back.
- I started adding new sections and highlighted instructions to myself.??
- I noticed that there is a section change and that the references show up as end notes.? I began to get the hang of that.
- I changed the Microsoft Word options to eliminate undesirable automatic behavior (hyphenation, symbol and glossary substitutions, etc.)
I also consulted some additional documents for their contribution to creation of Internet Drafts:
1id-guidelines.txt
: (2002-09-05 edition), the Internet-Draft Guidelinesrfc2026.txt
: Internet Standards Process, version 3 (referenced from the draft)rfc2119.txt
: Keywords for Requirements Levels (referenced from the draft)rfc2223.txt
: Instructions to RFC AuthorsThere is an on-line document on Internet Draft Nits that I also checked out.? These, led me to make changes in the format and in other material.
I looked at a number of requirements documents and made a variety of adjustments.? This left me with a working document to keep making edits on.
In downloading the
2-word.template.rtf
document, Word notices that the download is from the Web and offers opportunity to open it for editing.? My personal firewall catches Word wanting to be on the internet twice, and then offers me a logon dialog to the server.? This is presumably because of FrontPage extensions or Office extensions. These documents should be stored in a form that does not invite authentication for editing rights and that does not provoke firewall software.
I really do need to have something like ZoneAlarm on all of my computers, just not the roving one, compagno.
I started seeing what it takes to produce a simple text document set up appropriately.
Installed the Generic / Text Only printer and ran a test on it.
I set UniRed as my default editor for *.prn files, and then thought the files weren't being produced.? The file is apparently a problem with UniRed being command-line-launched with a long file name.? This version of UniRed does not do Win32 file-opening properly to work with long file names everywhere.
When I access the *.prn files through the Open ... dialog, I get to see them.? They look good, except that the page footers are missing.? They are also missing when I use the 4DOS list command.? I will need to troubleshoot that.
I went through and read more of the instructions in rfc3285 and made more adjustments based on what it says there.? Word seems to be set up properly.? It had the page settings already, and the header and footer styles were also set properly.
I printed Working Edit 00.01.? Still no visibility for footers.
I moved
crlf.exe
to the Compagnoc:\comando\tools\
subdirectory and put that subdirectory in my path.I got the 00.01-edit file to convert.? The footing lines are really not there.? I don't know why that is!
I then did get some results, but not by having 55 lines of text on a page.? I can only get 54!? What I did was make the footing area one line bigger and set the footer to be one line up from the bottom of the page.
I fooled around some more, but then I messed it up completely with the 00.02 edit file.? The headings and footers disappeared altogether.? I was manipulating the "boxes" that the footers appear in and that may be a clue.
