This page applies the Creative Commons non-web Text Notice instructions that were in effect at the time the copies of the Attribution 2.0 deed and legal-code pages were downloaded and preserved.  We use a modification of the recommended text to support documents that have both printed and electronic renditions, with hyperlinks into the World Wide Web.

General Recommended Text

The recommended text for non-web text notices is shown in the figure:

Proposed Text in Electronic Documents

Many documents are distributed in electronic form and are also intended to be printed and read in print.   Adobe PDF documents have that characteristic, as do Microsoft Office Word documents, and other word-processing and desktop-publishing document forms.

These documents may be viewed in electronic form, and hyperlinks may be included in them.  In addition, the hyperlinks may be designed to be relative to the location of the copy of the document in a computer or they may require access to the World-Wide Web for resolution.

For TROSTing, we want to have the document be usable, with the Creative Commons Attribution License notice absolutely clear.   The following general form is proposed:

Creative Commons LicenseThis work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/ or send a letter to Creative Commons, 559 Nathan Abbott Way, Stanford, California 94305, USA.

The material will be aligned beneath the copyright notice in the customary location for the type of work.  The following approach is applied:

  1. The distinctive and recognizable "Some Rights Reserved" logo is presented using an included image.  It is a copy that does not have to be fetched from the Creative Commons site.  If it is possible to create a web link at the image, it will link to the Attribution 2.0 Deed page on the Creative Commons site, with a rel="license" attribute.  Because the .gif image does not render well on high-quality printed output, a high-quality graphic image with matching appearance will be employed where appropriate and available.  The rdf-carrying comment will also be included in any anchor tag that permits it.
  2. The "Creative Commons Attribution License" phrase will, in an electronic edition, provide a link to a nearby copy of the Attribution 2.0 Deed, if that is possible.  Otherwise it also links to the Creative Commons site page of the deed.  If a link is not available in the electronic document, the underlines will be omitted.  The rel="nofollow" attribute will  be provided for a local version, rel="license" applies only to links to the definitive documents on the Creative Commons site.
  3. Similarly, the given URL will be supported as a link if that is achievable with the given electronic form.  The underlining will be absent if there is no link in the electronic version of the text material.  The rel="license" attribute will be provided if possible.

0.10 2005-05-02-18:16 Confine rel="license" to links to the definitive Creative Commons pages
We adopt the practice of having rel="license" apply for links to the authoritative materials.  Links to cached versions are always with "nofollow".  In the figures, "nofollow" is used because these are mentions of the documents, not uses of them.
0.00 2005-04-26-21:41 Provide cached version of the non-web text notice
This page links to the page retrieved from the Creative Commons site on 2005-04-26-21:35 -0700 (pdt).  The MHTML-format page captured at that time is here (4,181 byte .mht file).  This rendition is preserved for reference in the event that the Creative Commons version is inaccessible for any reason.
